Background

January 28, 2026

In March 2017, Board staff undertook the process of an Accommodation Review for our schools in Cobourg. This involved many meetings of the Accommodation Review Committee, Public Meetings in the area and culminated in a Board decision reached in February 2018 that approved the closure of St. Michael Catholic Elementary School.

The Board has been pursuing funding for Capital Improvements since that motion was passed. In August 2025 the Board received Ministry funding for the renovation of Notre Dame Catholic Elementary School, a project which will be completed over the next few months. We will also be using a portion of our Ministry School Renewal Allocation to replace the portapak at the Notre Dame site. Upon completion of this project we will have satisfied all the conditions of the original Board motion for closure of St. Michael CES.

At the Board meeting on Jan. 27, 2026, our trustees passed a motion affirming their support for the board motion approved by their predecessors.

Board staff have many parties both inside and outside of the Board with whom we must discuss our plans to close St. Michael CES. These discussions will take some time to unfold, Board staff have created this information page on our PVNC Engage platform with an opportunity for community members to ask questions.
