May Update for Families:
May 29, 2026
Dear PVNC Catholic Families,
Beginning in September, the Board will begin standardizing schedules across our system to a Balanced Day model.
Earlier this year, we engaged with our community via the PVNC Engage platform. We appreciate the parents, guardians, and community members who took the time to share their thoughts. We heard a diverse range of perspectives, including positive feedback regarding unhurried eating times, as well as concerns regarding student fatigue and outdoor play.
The Balanced Day schedule consists of:
- 300 instructional minutes
- Two longer nutrition/activity breaks that include both indoor and outdoor time. Breaks are between 40 and 45 minutes depending on the school
- Instructional blocks of approximately 60 to 120 minutes.
It is important to note that bell times will not change as a result of the new Balanced Day schedule.
To ensure a successful transition, the Board is implementing a phased rollout over the next two school years:
- September 2026: All elementary schools located within Peterborough City will transition to the Balanced Day schedule.
- September 2027: All remaining PVNC Catholic elementary schools outside of Peterborough City will transition to the model.
This decision was made with a firm commitment to establishing a stable, optimal learning environment for all students.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership and support as we prepare for a successful 2026–2027 school year.
Background:
Currently PVNC Catholic students at our elementary schools are on the traditional schools day. The day consists of:
- 300 instructional minutes
- 60-minute lunch period - includes both indoor and outdoor time (typically 20min eating /40 min outside)
- Two additional recess periods - varying lengths
- Instructional blocks of approximately 40-60 minutes
In an effort to better meet the needs of our students, PVNC Catholic is seeking feedback on a Balanced Day Schedule. A Balanced Day Schedule consists of:
- 300 instructional minutes
- Two longer nutrition/activity breaks that include both indoor and outdoor time. Breaks are between 40 and 45 minutes depending on the school
- Instructional blocks of approximately 60 to 120 minutes.
Please review the included presentation for more detail and provide your thoughts via the questions below.
The survey for feedback closes January 30, 2026 at 4:30 p.m.
