As part of our ongoing efforts to create and maintain safe, inclusive and accepting schools, the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington (PVNC) Catholic District School Board undertakes a School Climate Survey every two years to gather input from students, staff, and parents in each of our schools.
The survey is required by the Ministry of Education as part of the Safe Schools initiative, and provides feedback to each school about the extent to which parents, students and staff feel their school supports learning and positive behaviour and promotes a safe and inclusive environment.

About the Climate Survey
School climate refers to the learning environment and the relationships within a school community. A positive school climate is one where everyone feels safe, accepted, and included, and where respectful and inclusive behaviour is consistently promoted. It plays a vital role in preventing harmful behaviours and fostering student success.
Key Features of a Positive School Climate:
- Safety, inclusion, and acceptance for all students, staff, and families
- Respectful, fair, and kind interactions that build healthy relationships
- Ongoing community engagement and open dialogue
- Curriculum, teaching, and assessment practices that reflect diversity and equity
- Student support and leadership opportunities that reinforce anti-bullying efforts
- Consistent promotion of board codes of conduct and inclusive education policies
School Climate Surveys
Ontario school boards are required to conduct anonymous climate surveys every two years with students, parents, and staff. Participation is voluntary. These surveys help schools:
- Assess perceptions of safety and inclusion
- Evaluate and improve bullying prevention strategies
- Support safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environments
- Track progress and identify areas needing attention
Results are shared with each school’s Safe and Accepting Schools Team and are used to guide planning and continuous improvement efforts.
